Howdy

In 2024, Amanda Leigh Asmus and William Pierce founded Exurbanite Preservation, a Baltimore-based restoration practice redefining what it means to rebuild. Originally rooted in design and preservation, the studio evolved to meet the urgent realities of fire and water damage, bringing together tradespeople, conservators, and neighbors to restore homes with purpose, not patchwork.

Their story began along backcountry roads in Pennsylvania and Virginia, where fading barns and foundation stones stood as quiet monuments to lost craftsmanship. As children of these places, Amanda and Will recognized the beauty and resilience in forgotten structures and the communities that built them. That reverence, once expressed through furniture and heritage design, now informs their work repairing homes affected by disaster. They believe every restoration should protect what’s irreplaceable, honor what’s handmade, and empower residents to steward their spaces with authority.

From their studio in Windsor Hills, they’ve created a new approach where restoration isn’t reactive but restorative. Through field-tested methods, hands-on traditions, and a growing archive of local knowledge, Exurbanite Preservation is helping Baltimore retain its skilled trades, one building at a time.
